Breakout Sessions

Friday afternoon

Is having a vision really that important? Vision statements are often cheesy and rarely move people to action — or are heard once and quickly forgotten about. But, whether it’s for your personal life, your ministry or your parish, dreaming a vision of the future that inspires hope and passion is crucial. In this workshop, you will learn practical ways to craft a winning vision.

How do people come to faith in our culture today? Often, they belong before they believe—and long before they behave. In this session, discover how radical hospitality, intentional connection, and authentic community form the foundation for evangelisation and discipleship in the parish.

Senior Leadership Team. Parish Pastoral Council. Two teams. Two purposes. One mission. What’s the difference between a SLT and a PPC? Why do parishes need both? Using the leadership “pyramid,” this session offers a clear vision for how mission-focused parishes are structured for discernment, alignment, and execution.

Think you need more people, money, or programmes to renew your parish? Think again. This session will inspire small parishes to embrace their unique strengths, overcome common limitations, and thrive in mission — even with fewer resources.

Stewardship is about more than Sunday collections. It’s about forming disciples who give generously of their time, talent, and treasure. This session will explore how parishes can cultivate a culture of generosity that not only funds the mission but forms hearts for Christ.

Saturday afternoon

Many missional parishes use an evangelisation tool like Alpha to share the Gospel with the unchurched. Like any tool, it can be used effectively and bear fruit — and similarly, it can be misused and not bear the fruit you expected. Whether you have no Alpha experience at all or have been running for a while and need a refresh, this session is for you. Join Carly Mulqueen, Parish Leader from St Peter Chanel Parish in Christchurch, and Merv Bassett from Alpha, who will guide you through the most common pitfalls in running Alpha, and equip you with tools and insights to make a strong start and run Alpha well.

When you think of someone full of passion for the gospel, you may be tempted to think that they have received a special anointing not meant for anyone else. And while it’s true — the Holy Spirit gives us gifts as he chooses (1 Cor. 12:11) — the reality is that life in the Spirit is only extraordinary because ordinary men and women open their hearts to the supernatural life he wants to pour into us. As Catholics, how can we open ourselves up to this tremendous gift God is giving us? How can we help others accept it? Join Divine Renovation’s Chris da Silva in this session exploring the supernatural life in the Spirit.

Preaching that doesn’t move hearts won’t move the mission. This clergy-only breakout will focus on missional, kerygmatic preaching that leads people to a life-changing encounter with Jesus — and challenges them to follow him in mission.

Music isn’t filler — it’s formation. In this session, we’ll explore how worship music can reflect and reinforce your parish’s mission, inspire a deeper encounter with God, and bring people into vibrant participation at Mass and beyond.

Discipleship doesn’t happen by accident. Learn how to design and implement a clear, intentional pathway that moves people from curiosity to conviction — from visitors to missionary disciples. Practical steps. Spirit-led strategy.

In many parishes, formation for the sacraments tends to be more transactional than transformational — with many parents and children jumping through hoops of formation, only never to be seen again. Is there an opportunity for us to reimagine this process in such a way that leads people onto a path of discipleship? Join Alison Carroll, Parish Leader from Tongariro Catholic, Taupō, in this session where we explore the real potential of discipleship-based sacrament preparation that prioritises conversion over courses.

If you’re leading renewal in your parish, chances are you’ve been inspired by the example of another missional parish. The truth is, your parish’s missionary fruitfulness will inevitably impact another. How can you amplify the good things God is doing in your parish, and multiply that impact on others? In this session, we will share insights and ways your parish can spread renewal by being a mission multiplier.

Prayer isn’t a separate activity from the mission — it fuels it. Learn how to anchor your leadership and parish life in prayer that listens, intercedes, and aligns your parish to the Holy Spirit’s lead. Practical, powerful, and Spirit-filled.

Alpha is just the beginning. What happens after the kerygma? This session will explore how parishes can intentionally launch small groups that sustain relationships, deepen faith, and move people along a pathway of discipleship.
